On simulating episodic events against a background of noise-like non-episodic events

Simulation, as an art and a science, deals with the issue of allowing the practitioner to model events using their respective probability distributions. Thus, it is customary for simulations to model the behaviour of accidents, telephone calls, network failures etc. In this paper, we consider a relatively new field, namely that of modelling episodic events such as earthquakes, nuclear explosion...

Spectral Analysis of Ellerman Bombs

By use of the high-resolution spectral data obtained with THEMIS on 2002 September 5, the characteristics of 14 well-observed Ellerman bombs (EBs) have been analyzed. Our results indicate that 9 of the 14 EBs are located near the longitudinal magnetic polarity inversion lines. Most of the EBs are accompanied by mass motions. The most obvious characteristic of the EB spectra is the two emission ...

Statistics, Morphology, and Energetics of Ellerman Bombs

We have performed a detailed analysis of several hundreds Hα Ellerman bombs in the low chromosphere, above an emerging flux region. We find that Ellerman bombs may be small-scale, low-altitude, magnetic reconnection events that heat the low chromosphere in the active region. Their energy content varies between 10 erg and 10 erg, typical of subflaring activity.

Visualizing Events: Simulating Meaning in Language

Background In this note, we present results from a new approach to modeling the semantics of natural language, Multimodal Semantic Simulations (MSS), being pursued by the first author and his students. This approach assumes both a richer formal model of events and their participants, as well as a modeling language for constructing 3D visualizations of objects and events denoted by natural langu...

Simulating Rare Events in Dynamical Processes

Atypical, rare trajectories of dynamical systems are important: they are often the paths for chemical reactions, the haven of (relative) stability of planetary systems, the rogue waves that are detected in oil platforms, the structures that are responsible for intermittency in a turbulent liquid, the active regions that allow a supercooled liquid to flow. . . . Simulating them in an efficient, ...
